With the Franco-Tuscany expedition in Egypt, directed by Jean-François Champollion and Ippolito Rosellini, the scientific Egyptology begins.

This large painting, by Giuseppe Angelelli on the entrance staircase of the Egyptian Museum in Florence, shows the two directors and also some of the participants of the expedition:
